The Music Mansion
Did you know that Ward 2 has its own Music Mansion?
In 1879 a group of 12 women pianists created the Chopin Club of Rhode Island -- one of the first such clubs in the nation. For decades the group met in private homes or rented spaces and grew to include annual concerts (and to admit men). In the early 1900s there was a split in the group and The Chaminade Club of Providence was founded by Mary K. Hail, named in honor of Cecile Chaminade, a trailblazing female composer, singer and pianist. The Chaminade Club organized performances and events, often in Mr. Hail’s home.
In 1928 retained architect Albert Harkness to design house at 88 Meeting Street that combined a concert hall and reception rooms on the first floor and living space on the second floor. Mrs. Hail bequeathed the house to the Providence community, and upon her death in 1948 left a trust to maintain it. In 1996, the Friends of the Music Mansion formed a non-profit to ensure the future of the building. Today the Music Mansion maintains a regular calendar of musical events in this special space, including concerts organized by The Chaminade Club.
