Marvel Gymnasium

The Marvel Gymnasium (left) was built in 1927 across the street from Brown’s stadium and next to where the Jewish Alliance is today. This gymnasium was home to Brown’s basketball, fencing, boxing, wrestling, squash and handball teams, and hosted concerts including Jimi Hendrix in 1968 and Emmylou Harris in 1976. The building was torn down in 2001, but its cupola was moved to Brown’s Nelson Athletics Center (right) on Hope Street. The cupola’s original clock face was retained which features the letters A-L-D-R-I-C-H  F-I-E-L-D in place of the standard 1-12 numbers, a reference to the cupola’s original home.
